Weekend Update 8-29-21

Updated: Aug 30, 2021

Dear M100 Family,

A great end to a great week for the M100! We had some really good rehearsals leading up to the best first game we, as a staff, have had here at BHS! Hope you students and parents felt the same way! Our Principal, Mr. Smith couldn't stop bragging about the whole night! He was very impressed with the performance by the students but also mentioned the unsolicited feedback he got from numerous Georgetown ISD employees and parents. He was told multiple times how classy, respectful, well-mannered, and talented our students were. We represent ourselves and BHS in the best way. We, your band staff, are also super proud of you! Please continue this streak as we move forward with more work ahead to continue creating our show and supporting our Tigers on to another victory this coming Friday night!

One thing we can continue to work on - be extra careful in this current environment. As I told you in the gym Friday night, we need to do everything we can to stop the spread of COVID in our organization. It is currently too high and we’ve had too many absences to have long-term success (I define success not just in trophies and ratings but in the overall experience for our students and in the return on investment for the work they are putting in). WE (and our school nurses) encourage everyone to stay home if they are having symptoms. We wish ultimate good health for everyone. Please do what you believe you should do to ensure your health and safety and the health of your fellow band members. As you’ve heard so many times, we are all in this together, and this should be taken quite literally as we are a team and we can only succeed when everyone is healthy and able to participate. Please help take care of yourselves and each other. Thank you.

FORMS FOR BAND

  • We still have some students who haven’t turned in ALL forms. ALL forms needed for band are here: (also hardcopies in band hall)

RETURN TO PARTICIPATION AFTER A COVID DIAGNOSIS - WOODWINDS/BRASS/PERCUSSION/COLORGUARD:

This was sent out Friday, Aug. 27th, when I received the directive:

This is the process we will use regarding a student returning (after a positive COVID diagnosis) to participation in band (includes Colorguard)

STARTING MONDAY, AUGUST 30TH - NOT RETROACTIVE.

  • IF your child has been diagnosed as COVID positive, when they are ready to return (based on the criteria explained by our school nurses), please have them bring a doctor's note - signed by a physician - saying that they are cleared to return to activity in band. THEY ARE TO BRING THIS NOTE TO ME-MRS. GILL. This is not a physical, this is a note from a doctor stating they are free from infection and able to return to the band and Colorguard activity.

  • I, Mrs. Gill, will make a copy of this note and give the original to our campus nurses so that they can inform those who need to know that your child is cleared to return. This includes proper coding in Skyward to reflect that they are back on campus and not at home.

The doctor's note allowing students to return to participation is a state UIL requirement this semester.

Thank you very much for your flexibility and understanding as we navigate through recent challenges.

Please feel free to contact me if you have any questions. Thank you!

UNIFORM ISSUES?

Students, please fill out this google form if there is anything that needs to be repaired on your bibbers. You may also request a new size using this form.

PARTICIPATION IN MARCHING BAND AFTER SCHOOL REHEARSALS - HEALTH AND SAFETY

Student participation in after school rehearsals is improving! Seems like students are doing better with hydrating and making sure they’ve eaten lunch before rehearsals. We still have some who are struggling. DO NOT FORGET TO BRING WATER TO REHEARSALS!!!!!

We always have extra water available at rehearsals and our students have set up a canopy to provide some shade. Water breaks are taken at 20-25 minute intervals but students may always get off the field to drink water whenever they need. Students MUST bring their M100 water jug (or another gallon-sized jug) filled with water to every rehearsal AND they should be hydrating with water throughout the day before and after marching rehearsals to ensure they don’t get dehydrated at practice. Students should eat healthy meals throughout the day for energy.

IF a director is made aware of a situation where a student is not actively participating in the rehearsal process for an extended period of time (20 minutes or more), the director will ask the student to call a parent or guardian if they are able, or the director will call, and request that student be picked up as soon as possible.

If a student is not able to participate, for health or other reasons, consistently (reoccurring issue - many days or weeks in a row, for example), a parent conference (live, zoom, or phone call) will be scheduled to discuss whether or not the student is able to continue in the organization and what that participation might look like. Band is a physical activity and students must be in good physical condition and take care of themselves to participate.

BAND “UNDERS”

If you ordered Unders at or before Everything Day, your child should have received them in their band class this last week. If you did not receive them or still need to place an order - contact Cassie Fothergill (Booster Pres.) - cassie.fothergill@gmail.com

Also contact Cassie Fothergill if you still need to purchase MARCHING SHOES. She will advise.
